Riots after elections in G-B
Javed ChElections were held on 21 December 2009, in LA19, District Ghizer, to elect member for Gilgit Baltistan Assembly. Front runner in this election was Nawaz Naji, a leader of National Balwaristan Front. It was widely believed that Nawaz Naji would win this seat with a big margin. Through out the day all the poles and reports from all 12 poling stations indicated that Nawaz Naji was leading the poles. Up till 8pm at night it was declared that Nawaz Naji was leading the poles.Supporters of Nawaz Naji were preparing for celebrations when, to surprise of everyone, at 9pm it was declared that Peoples Party candidate Pir Saeed Karam Ali Shah has won the elections. This news resulted in a strong protest by supporters of Nawaz Naji in various localities. The police and Rangers responded by firing at the protesters which killed on person and injured. This further infuriated the angry people and they have started attacking official government building and public property. The situation is very tensed and supporters of Nawaz Naji fear for life of their leader and other senior political activists.The protesters reject Pakistani style of democracy in Gilgit Baltistan and demanded new elections. Shafqat Inquilabi, a leader of BNF while talking to Dr Shabir Choudhry on phone said, ‘All those who love democracy and believe in human rights of people must protest against this attack on fundamental rights of people, and oppose Pakistani imperialist design in Gilgit Baltisan’. He further said, ‘He would hold a press conference in Muzaffarabad (tomorrow 23 December) to expose the rigging and Pakistani oppression in Gilgit Baltistan. Islamabad, December 24: According to a private TV channel, Express TV, Pir Karam Ali Shah, former deputy chief executive of Gilgit – Baltistan, and Ghulam Muhammad have been nominated in the murder case of seventeen years old Zubair, son of Muhammad Jan.
The TV channel also reported that relatives of Zubair have refused to bury him, until the culprits are brought to justice. Hundreds of men and women marched from Sher Qilla to Gahkuch today, demanding justice. The protesters had also blocked the Ghizar – Chitral road for all traffic. They returned to their homes after getting the assurance that polling would be held again in Sher Qilla. The returning officer, reportedly, has also announced recounting of votes in other four stations.
In a press statement the chief organizer of Progressive Youth Front, Baba Jan, has demanded that the chief minister, IGP and Chief Secretary of Gilgit – Baltistan shall resign because they were not able to maintain law and order at a small polling station, despite of deploying Elite Forces of the Police department and Rangers.
He has also said that the world community shall notice of all injustices being committed against the citizens of Gilgit – Baltistan

Gahkuch, December 23: Nawaz Khan Naji has accused the district leadership of PPP, including secretary general Ghulam Muhammad, of allegedly being involved in murder of a young activist, Zubair, in last night’s firing.
He was addressing a rally at Japukay village of Ghizar District, a few hours ago. He has also accused Syed Mehdi Shah, chief minister of Gilgit – Baltistan, for alleged involvement in violence that erupted last night.
BNF has also asked the governor and chief minister of Gilgit – Baltistan to resign form their positions.
In another development Shafqat Ali Inquillabi, former spokesman of BNF, addressed a press conference at Central Press Club, Muzaffarabad, along with Kashmiri nationalist leaders Muhammad Ali, Zahid and Mir Afzal Sulheria.
In the press conference he demanded immediate suspension of DC Ghizar, Muhammad Abbas, and SP Ghizar, Sultan Azam. He also accused DC Astore, Qamar Shehzad, of being involved in the "conspiracy". Qamar Shehzad belongs to Ishkoman valley.
Shafqat also demanded that international organizations, including Amnesty International, British Government, European Parliament and other rights based organizations shall take notice of the "violation of basic human rights in Gilgit – Baltistan".

Gahkuch, December 23: Angry protesters have blocked the Chitral – Ghizar road near Sher – Qilla and Buber protesting against the death of seventeen (17) years old Zubair, son of Muhammad Jan, and injury of political activists last night. Markets have also been closed in Gahkuch, capital of Ghizar district.

In the meanwhile, government officials have denied the ‘allegation’ that elite force opened fired on the protesters. They have said that the murderers are unknown people and not security officials.
BNF, on the other hand, has said that the riots were started by supporters of Pir Karam Ali Shah and flared by security agencies, to manipulate the results.
The overall situation is very tense in the otherwise peaceful Ghizar valley
